Big Interview alternative

A Big Interview alternative for one-way video interviews

Big Interview is a broad interview curriculum. If the thing in your inbox is a timed recording with nobody on the other end, you may want a narrower rehearsal.

People search for a Big Interview alternative for a few different reasons. Some want a lower price than a month of curriculum. Some already have the interview link and only need to practice the countdown. Some cannot use a desktop browser tonight and want to practice by typing on a phone.

Big Interview and OneShot Interview do not do the same job. Big Interview publishes lessons, practice interviews, and, on its longer plans, resume and LinkedIn tools. OneShot Interview rehearses a one-way video interview: a prep timer, an answer timer, one take, then a STAR score and a rewritten version of the answer you just gave.

When Big Interview is the better fit

Stay with Big Interview if you want a course, not a single format. The pricing page describes question practice, delivery, and, on the Accelerator plan, resume and LinkedIn work. The lifetime plan is a one-time $299 fee with no expiration, which is a different offer from a pack of sessions. If your school already subscribes, their help center says that access is free, and that is hard to beat.

Their help center also describes an Answer Builder for planning responses with the STAR method when you do not have a camera. That is useful preparation. It is not the same as speaking, or typing, against a clock that stops the take.

When a one-way rehearsal is the closer fit

HireVue, Spark Hire, Willo, and similar invites are a question, a countdown, and a recording. A curriculum can teach the ideas. It will not, by itself, show you whether your result arrived before the timer. OneShot is built for that hour before you open the link.

You can try one question with no account. The score is on the answer you gave, and the rewrite uses your story rather than a generic sample. If you need more than the free question and the free full session, you pay for sessions. You do not start a subscription.

How to spend the free question

Pick a story you might actually use: a deadline, a disagreement, or why this role. Set the answer timer to the number in your invite, or to two minutes if you have not seen it yet. Write three words during the prep countdown. Then answer once. Read which part of STAR was thin before you record a second version in a full session.

Questions worth a timed take

These are practice prompts for a timed one-way answer. They are not Big Interview's questions and not any employer's.

  1. 1. Why are you interested in this role right now?

How to approach it: Two specific links to the job. One can be the work. One can be a thing you have already done that resembles it.

  2. 2. Tell us about a time you had to prioritize when everything felt urgent.

How to approach it: Say what you did first, what you delayed, and what got finished. Being busy is not the method.

  3. 3. Describe a time you received feedback you did not agree with at first.

How to approach it: One sentence on the disagreement. The rest is what you changed, and whether the work got better.

  4. 4. Tell us about a time you depended on someone who worked differently from you.

How to approach it: What you changed in your own behavior, and how the shared work ended.

  5. 5. What is a result you are proud of from the last year?

How to approach it: Keep the setup short. Name your actions and a result a stranger can picture. Do not upgrade the result.
