HireVue practice
Practice your HireVue interview with real timers and AI feedback
A HireVue one-way interview is a question on screen, a countdown, and a recording with no one on the other end. Rehearse that format, then get AI feedback on your structure, relevance, and filler words. Your first full session is free. Your video never leaves your browser.
No credit card · No download · One take, like many real HireVue invites
How a HireVue one-way interview usually works
HireVue is a video interviewing platform many employers use for campus, graduate, and high-volume hiring. The employer decides the questions, the timers, and whether you get a retake. Candidates typically see something like this:
- An email invitation with a link and a deadline. You can often start any time before the deadline, then finish the questions in one sitting.
- Questions appear one at a time, as text or as a short video of someone asking.
- A preparation countdown, then recording starts. When the answer timer hits zero, the recording stops.
- Answer windows are set by the employer and often fall somewhere in the 1 to 3 minute range. Some questions are shorter.
- Many HireVue interviews allow a single take. Your screen will say if a retake is available. Do not assume one.
- Some employers add games or other assessments in the same HireVue flow. OneShot practices the video-answer portion only.
Reviewers often watch a lot of interviews back to back. They are looking for a direct answer, a clear structure, and whether you sound like you can do the job. A long warm-up is easy to skip past.
Rehearse the format, three steps
- Choose the HireVue format. We preload a common timer setup. Change any number to match your invitation.
- Answer questions on camera, one take. Pick a question set for your industry or stay with general behavioral questions.
- Review STAR, relevance, and filler-word feedback, then compare your answer with an improved version built from your story.
Common HireVue interview questions
These are not HireVue's questions, and they are not a leaked set from any employer. They are the kinds of prompts candidates commonly report. Practice them out loud, on a timer.
1. Why do you want to work in this industry?
How to approach it: Give one concrete reason, then a second that ties to your experience. Skip the slogan.
2. Tell us about a time you had to learn something quickly.
How to approach it: Name the gap, how you closed it, and how you used what you learned.
3. Describe a time you worked with someone whose style was different from yours.
How to approach it: Show what you changed in your own behavior, not what was wrong with them.
4. Tell us about a time you set a goal and achieved it.
How to approach it: The goal, the obstacle, your actions, the result. Keep the result specific.
5. Describe a situation where you had to persuade someone.
How to approach it: Start from their objection. What evidence or change of plan actually moved them?
6. Tell us about a time you handled a heavy workload.
How to approach it: Explain how you chose what to do first. A story about being busy is not a method.
7. What motivates you in your work or studies?
How to approach it: Pick one motivation you can prove with a short example.
8. Why should we move you forward to the next stage?
How to approach it: Two proof points tied to the role. Then stop.
HireVue interview tips
- Use the prep seconds to jot three words: situation, action, result. Do not try to script a paragraph.
- Answer the question in the first sentence. Reviewers decide quickly whether you are on topic.
- Look at the lens. A sticky note beside the camera helps if you keep checking your own face.
- If the invite says one take, practice one take. Re-recording in rehearsal trains the wrong habit.
- Leave a little time at the end so the clock does not cut off your result.
- Close other apps that might grab the microphone before you start the real interview.
Built for one-way interviews, not generic mock interviews
- HireVue-style timers you can match to the times in your invitation
- One-take mode, so you practice recovering instead of restarting
- STAR, relevance, and filler-word scoring on every answer
- An improved version of your own answer, built from your story
- Video stays in your browser. The transcript text is sent for scoring
Questions about this format
Are HireVue questions the same for every employer?
No. Employers write their own questions and change them. Practice the patterns, not a supposed master list.
Can I redo a HireVue answer?
Only if that employer turned retakes on. Many do not. Practice in one-take mode so you are ready either way.
Is OneShot affiliated with HireVue?
No. OneShot Interview is an independent practice tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by HireVue.
