What a Modern Hire on-demand interview usually is
Modern Hire was an interviewing and assessment platform. HireVue announced on May 9, 2023 that it had acquired Modern Hire. Some employers and invitations still use the older name. HireVue's own description of on-demand interviews from that product is straightforward: you answer job-specific questions at a time you choose, and the hiring team watches the recording later.
- An on-demand interview is recorded. A live Modern Hire interview is a different appointment, with a person on the call. This page is only for the recorded kind.
- The questions are chosen for the job. There is no public master list, and a forum post from a previous year is one person's report.
- Prep time, answer length, and retakes are employer settings. We could not verify one Modern Hire clock that every invite uses, so match the numbers on your screen. If the email does not list them, you will see them when you start.
- The same hiring process can include assessments or simulations as well as video. OneShot practices the recorded answer only.
- HireVue's write-up of one customer says candidates completed on-demand video on their own schedule, before any live interview. Your employer's steps can still differ.
- Rehearse one take. If a retake exists, the interview screen will say so. Do not assume it.
A reviewer watching a recording cannot ask you to land the ending. They are listening for a direct answer, a specific action, and a result that arrives before the timer does.
Rehearse the format, three steps
- Choose the Modern Hire format. We preload a common timer setup. Change any number to match your invitation.
- Answer questions on camera, one take. Pick a question set for your industry or stay with general behavioral questions.
- Review STAR, relevance, and filler-word feedback, then compare your answer with an improved version built from your story.
Common Modern Hire interview questions
These prompts are practice examples. They are not Modern Hire's questions and not any employer's confidential interview.
1. What drew you to this particular job?
How to approach it: Use two details from the posting. Tie each one to something you have already done. Skip a general speech about the industry.
2. Tell us about a time you followed a process even though improvising would have been faster.
How to approach it: Name the step you refused to skip, why it mattered, and what the outcome was.
3. Describe a time you helped someone who was already frustrated.
How to approach it: Start with what they needed. Then what you did, in order. End with how it finished, not with how calm you stayed.
4. Tell us about a time a plan changed after you had already started the work.
How to approach it: What you stopped, what you kept, and what still got delivered. The change is the situation. Your choices are the answer.
5. Describe a time you caught a small error before it spread.
How to approach it: What you checked, what was wrong, and what you changed so the same miss was less likely.
6. Tell us about a time you had to explain something complicated in plain language.
How to approach it: Who the listener was, which detail you left out on purpose, and whether they could act on the explanation.
7. What is a piece of feedback you actually used?
How to approach it: Quote the feedback in one line. Spend the rest on the next time you worked, and what was different.
Modern Hire interview tips
- Read the invite for think time and answer time before you practice. If it names HireVue instead, use the HireVue practice page and the same habit.
- During prep, write three words: situation, action, result. A full script makes you read, and a slightly different question breaks it.
- Start with the answer. A thank-you uses the only seconds a reviewer is sure to watch.
- Stop one sentence early. A finished result beats an extra example that the clock cuts in half.
- On a phone, type the answer if the browser does not caption you. The score is on the words. Add video only when you want to check framing.
- Close this site before you open the real interview. Practice is fair. A second screen during the recording is not.
Built for one-way interviews, not generic mock interviews
- A prep countdown and an answer timer you can set to the invite
- One take, so you practice finishing instead of restarting
- STAR, relevance, and filler-word scoring on the answer you gave
- A rewritten version that still uses your story
- One free question with no sign-up, then a first full session free. Further sessions start at $7 and do not auto-renew
Questions about this format
Is Modern Hire the same as HireVue?
HireVue acquired Modern Hire in May 2023. Some invitations still say Modern Hire. The candidate experience depends on what that employer configured. If your screen is a recorded question with a timer, practice that format. If it is a live interview, this rehearsal will not recreate the other person.
Are Modern Hire questions the same for every employer?
No. The employer writes them. Use the examples here to practice structure and pacing, then answer the prompt that actually appears.
Can I practice a Modern Hire interview for free, without a camera?
Yes. One question is free and does not need an account. The camera stays off unless you add it. You can type the answer on a phone.
How long should the answer be?
Use the limit in your invitation. If it is not listed yet, practice at two minutes and change it when you see the real timer. Leave room for the last sentence.
Is OneShot affiliated with Modern Hire or HireVue?
No. OneShot Interview is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Modern Hire or HireVue.
